LA ACM Chapter Technical Activity Committees
Chapter members of like technical interests can form technical committees
to discuss and/or present materials related to these interests. These TACs
come into existance and exist until the interest in the topic wanes. Currently
there are two TACs in the LA ACM Chapter. To reach the leaders see the
LA ACM key people directory.
Programming Languages (SIGPLAN)
SIGPLAN exists to promote the acquisition
and exchange of information on the theory, design, implementation, and
application of programming languages in order to educate its members and
advance the state of programming. In other words, we have meetings every
so often so we can learn things for free. This beats attending high-cost
seminars and conferences. Topics include the language du jour and
whatever else the program chair can scare up. Meetings are normally held
at LMU with an informal "dinner" beforehand.
Sometimes members even bring in freebie or discount CD-ROMs for distribution
to attendees. Mark the second Wednesday of each month on your PDA to alert
yourself to the possibility of a SIGPLAN meeting. Then follow the link
to what is currently on tap. When the opportunity arises, we hold joint
meetings with other SIGs, TACs, and the chapter, in which case the meeting
time and location might vary. Our meetings are open to all, and there are
no reservations required nor any fee charged. Parking is free at LMU.
Meetings have been temporarially suspended until SIGPLAN is reorganized. If you would like to be involved in the SIGPLAN reorganization, please contact either Eliz Manderfield or Lee Schmidt (see reference links below).

Artificial Intelligence (TACART)
At one time, TACART provided a series
of monthly seminars from September through May for presentations by local
AI researchers and practitioners. Members include students, professors,
software developers, and others having an interest in keeping abreast of
emerging AI tools and techniques.
In September of 1998, the 3 people who were doing most of the work found
themselves unable to continue. If you would like to help revive TACART,
contact the Los Angeles Chapter
executive committee and volunteer.
